Avi Shabbat

The Avi Shabbat is an annual event in cooperation with Hillels across North America to promote inter-faith dialogue and understanding. The Avi Shabbat uses Avi’s Story as an example of how one dedicated  individual can make a difference, and is dedicated to raising awareness about issues related to Israel on college campuses. On February 11th, 2011, over eighty Hillels and dozens of synagogues across North America participated in the Avi Shabbat initiative.

Avi Shabbat 2012

This year, ASF provided 36 campuses with micro grants to suppliment their Shabbat programing. Many campuses have either already hosted their programs or continue to join the initiative which began in early February and continues through the middle of March. A few great examples include the exciting program at NYU Hillel this year on February 3rd where the Avi Schaefer-Bridges Jum'ah/Shabbat Experience featured NYU President John Sexton. University of Rhode Island held its The Avi Schaefer Muslim/Jewish Shabbat Dinner and Tu B’Shevat Seder on Friday, February 10 at the Norman M. Fain Hillel Center.  Amy Olson, the Hillel director shares with us the following comments: "The dinner was attended by over 75 people including Jewish, Muslim, Christian and international students.  It was co-sponsored by the URI Chaplains Association and the Student Affairs Diversity Committee. Many University administrators were also in attendance including the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean of Students, the Director ofHousing and Residential Life and the Interim Director of Community, Equity and Diversity, Abu Bakr."

We congratulate the following Hillels who were awarded micro-grants:
